In 2021, Will Smith, in his book “Will”, writes:
“I was eleven years old, and Gigi had organized a children’s talent show, followed by an Easter-egg hunt in Resurrection Hall.
I had been practicing the Morris Albert song Feelings as a part of my piano lessons.
Then she sprung it on me: <<Lover boy, I want you to play this song for everybody at church on Easter>>.
At the time, it was the only song I knew how to play, and I had never played the piano in front of anybody except my family.
<< Wait Gigi, no I can’t, I’m not ready, I said. I’m gonna mess up the notes>>
She smiled…”
And so it was that two weeks later I found myself dressed in a cream, pin-striped three-piece Easter suit, sitting at the piano in Resurrection Hall.
I took a deep breath, somehow found an F, and began.
Morris Albert’s “Feelings” was ringing through Resurrection Hall for an audience of two hundred people. But I was only playing for one person.
All my career, my performances, my albums -everything- has been a relentless, unbroken quest to relive the delicious purity I felt when I played “Feelings” at Resurrection Hall for my Gigi.
I didn’t have to do anything different; I didn’t have to be anything different. In that moment, just as I was, bum notes and all, I was enough.”
